Frequently Asked Questions

As experienced therapists, we understand that you’ll naturally have some questions, and we’re here to put your mind at rest and reassure you that you are in the safest possible hands.

Is there anything I need to do to get ready for Colon Hydrotherapy?
  1. Eat or drink lightly in the two hours immediately before a colonic.
  2. If you are constipated add 2 heaped tablespoons of linseed (available in health food shops) per day.
  3. Two days before, increase your water intake to approx. 2 L per day
  4. Two days prior to your treatment reduce processed foods and increase fresh fruits and vegetables
  5. Finally, reduce tea, coffee, caffeinated beverages and alcohol before your treatment.
My period has arrived unexpectedly, can I have a treatment?

Yes absolutely as long as you are comfortable to do so and don’t experience too much cramping during it normally.

What will be okay to eat after getting a colonic?

What we suggest is that you eat a moderate amount of whatever seems gentle and nourishing to you. Just as it doesn’t make sense to get your car washed and then immediately drive it through mud, eating a meal known to cause trouble in your abdomen directly after getting a colonic isn’t an intelligent choice. Green leafy salads, vegetable soups, vegetable broth, fruit and fruit juices, and vegetable juices are the best choice.

Is colonic irrigation painful?

It rarely is. Painful experiences are the result of resistance, tension, inflammation or a proliferation of unbeneficial bacteria within the abdomen. A professional therapist is skilled at putting you at ease. Sometimes, there is a cramping as the muscles of the colon work to come back into shape. If discomfort does occur it is as a result of gas or debris in the colon it is brief and generally well tolerated. Most people enjoy their sessions, feeling light, clean and clear afterwards.

Will I be embarrassed?

Absolutely not! You are fully covered in a private, aesthetic room. Your therapist understands how important your comfort and dignity are and patient confidentiality is treated in the highest regard.

How long does Colonic Irrigation take?

Each session runs for 45 minutes. Your first session will include a naturopathic consultation so allow up to 90 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend on individual circumstances. Each and every one of us has different needs and responses to the treatment. Generally the more severe or long term your symptoms/disorders are, the more treatments you will need. However we begin with 3 sessions over 4-6 weeks and then take it from there.

Some people wonder why one session is not enough. The colon is 1.5 metres in length and is usually hardened and compacted with waste. The first session usually just starts the process of hydrating and softening, preparing for the 2nd and 3rd sessions.

What can I expect afterwards?

Most likely, you’ll feel great. You will feel lighter and enjoy a sense of well-being. Any activity you would ordinarily do such as work or exercise is fine. For some, the Colon Hydrotherapy may trigger several subsequent bowel movements for the next few hours; but there usually is not any uncontrollable urgency or discomfort.

Is colon irrigation safe?

Yes. State of the art equipment and experienced naturopaths ensure the highest standard of healthcare. Our system is “gravity fed” at low pressure. Only ultra filtered water is used and tubes and sheets are single use disposable packs.

What can I expect after a treatment?

Each person will experience different benefits. Most likely you’ll be feeling great, lighter, a sense of well-being, a lifting of spirits, a balance in mood, improved sleep, improved skin condition and weight control, with better digestion, a decrease in heartburn and indigestion, and have regular bowel movements.

You could feel light-headed or maybe chilled after your treatment due to the amount of toxins you have released this will only last for a few minutes and then you’ll be able to continue your day normally.

Who will Benefit From Colon Hydrotherapy?

Everybody would benefit from a Cleanse! The health of our Colon and gastro-intestinal tract dictates our overall health and well-being so conditions from A-Z may see an improvement. Acne, bloating ,bad breath ,body odor ,Candida ,constipation colitis, eczema, diverticulitis, diarrhea, gas , hemorrhoids (mild to moderate), headaches, heartburn & indigestion problems , fatigue, food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, skin problems, stress, parasites, weight control, hormonal issues such as PMS/PMT, Thyroid dysfunction and fertility issues

How will I know when the colon is empty?

It will probably never be empty, as it is an organ in continuous use. As more of the old, impacted material is released you will actually feel the water enter higher regions of the colon without any sense of obstruction. The objective ought not to be an empty colon, but rather a well-functioning colon.

Can I have a treatment if I get my period?

Yes you can have a treatment if your period arrives unexpectedly, just let your therapist know. If you are prone to cramping your therapist may suggest to wait for a number of days due to the bowels close proximity to the uterus.

Will it Help Me Lose Weight?

You would be amazed how much old hardened, faecal matter that can build up in your colon, causing sluggish bowel movements, resulting in excess weight. While this is not a weight loss procedure, it is interesting to note that many clients who complete a series of colonic treatments often report significant weight loss.

If I get too many, will the colon stop functioning on its own? Are colonics habit-forming?

Short answer: No!
The colonic is a tool intended to be used to create a clean and healthy colon. Our fulfillment comes from assisting you in healing your colon, not in making you dependent upon colonics. Actually, one of great properties about colonics is that a colonic is that it helps to tone the colon muscle so the colon doesn’t perform so sluggishly.

Will Laxatives or Enemas Achieve the Same Results?

Laxatives and enemas are not substitutes for colonic irrigation. Laxatives act as a chemical irritant and stimulate the muscular walls to abnormally contract to expel the irritating substances. Administrating them orally can also interfere higher up the alimentary tract where important digestion takes place.

Enemas are helpful to clean out the lowest 25 to 30cm of colon, but you are missing out approximately the last 1.2meters. Therefore, laxatives & enemas do not clean the whole Colon the same as Colon Hydrotherapy.

Will a colonic make me constipated or give me diarrhea?

Colonic Irrigation unlike enemas strengthen your bowel muscles so are ideally suited for those with a sluggish bowel, suffer with constipation or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Generally it may take up to 2 days following a treatment to have a bowel motion due to the deep clean that is carried out during a procedure. This is absolutely normal.

I’ve heard that I shouldn’t get colonics because it upsets the electrolyte balance. Is this true?

Short Answer: No! But let us explain why. Electrolytes are minerals in the body (mainly sodium and potassium salts) that maintain the proper electrical charge and pH balance (acid and alkalinity balance) in the various organs and tissues of the body. The stomach, for example, should maintain an acidic pH, while the duodenum (first part of the small intestine) should be alkaline (basic) in order for proper digestion to occur. If this balance is disrupted, then digestion will be impaired.

The pH electrical balance in the colon is very near neutral, ideally being slightly acidic. A strong acid or alkaline environment is not necessary because digestion does not take place in the colon. Rather, a major function of the colon is to reabsorb the fluid and electrolytes from the unformed stool that is moving into the colon from the small intestine. After the fluid and electrolytes are reabsorbed and stool is formed, the colon moves the stool into the rectum and out of the body. The majority of the material released during a colonic is formed stool that has already had the fluid and electrolytes removed from it, so the amount lost is very minimal and easily replaced by the body from the food and fluid we ingest.

Some people say that colonics wash out the intestinal flora and valuable nutrients. Is this so?

The truth is that the washing out of putrefied material in the large intestine, which is only partially reached in any colon irrigation, increases the good intestinal flora. Good bacteria can only breed in a clean environment that has been washed free of putrefaction and its accompanying harmful bacteria. That is why the intestines of a newborn baby immediately begin to grow good intestinal flora. Each time you clean out the putrefying “garbage” and make a better environment for the flora, they start to multiply immediately in their natural media.

With this in mind, it is a good idea to supplement with good intestinal bacteria after a colonic or series of colonics so that colonisation can take place in a healthier medium, i.e. the intestinal mucosa. Prevention is much easier by assisting your colon in maintaining healthy bacteria rather than waiting until bad bacteria have changed the environment of the colon to an unhealthy state.

What effect does Colon Hydrotherapy have on our immune systems?

The removal of stagnant waste material and hardened, impacted toxic residue could rejuvenate the immune tissue that resides in the intestines. Recent European studies show that 80% of immune tissue resides in the intestines. Colon Hydrotherapy is not a cure-all, but an important adjunctive therapy in the overall health care of the patient.
How can I tell if my colon is not functioning Properly?
There are many signs of a dysfunctional colon, some of the common signs are constipation, bloating, bad breath, body odor, diarrhea, gas, fatigue, headaches, irritable, sluggishness, skin problems
